Paul grew up in the Redding area. After attending Liberty Christian High School, he accepted a scholarship to play basketball at The Master’s College. Mr. Kaukonen then earned a California Teaching Credential at Simpson University. Mr. Kaukonen, delighted to be part of U-Prep for the last eight years, has taught Honors English II and Prep Latin for most of that time. This year, anticipating much hearing loss, Mr. K will be teaching Guitar II—an introduction to the electric guitar. While wearing OSHA approved hearing protection, Mr. K plans to teach a new generation the always annoying, yet slightly inspiring guitar store anthems: Iron Man, Smoke on the Water, and Stairway to Heaven. When not in the classroom, Coach Kaukonen can be found on the west side of campus in the athletic contest training center. Coaching has combined two of Mr. K’s great loves: preparing athletes for difficult challenges and using a whistle.
Paul and Sarah, married for nearly a decade, are responsible for the care and management of two children and a cat (and not necessarily in that order). The Kaukonen family, led by the imaginations of their boys Jakob and Micah, spends their free-time searching for hidden treasure, sailing for adventure on the deep blue sea, and encouraging wayward pirates to make a choice between entering a twelve-step rehabilitation program or walking the plank.
